Years 55+…

The Golden Years… kids are living on their own, yes! This is really a new beginning in your life to have fun. People are living much longer these days and there is still so much life to enjoy. As you think about scaling back your work schedule, be sure to stay active because it is the best way to maintain good health. Take pleasure in your children getting married and the birth of your grandchildren. Look forward to visits with your growing family and create memories through vacations together.

If you choose at some point, you can live in a community with your peers. Single or married, these living arrangements help you develop/keep relationships through social groups. More questions arise as you reach this stage in life. Now that your children are grown, will you downsize the house and spend more time traveling? Are you financially prepared for retirement? Have you recently experienced the death of your spouse/significant other? Are you contemplating marriage for the first, second or third time? Do you have plans for elder care? Is there an updated Will in a safe place?

Yes, it would have been nice if my husband and I were able to retire since both of us are in our late 60′s. However, since the recession has taken hold in our home state of Arizona it has been a battle to keep our heads above water. We do have some savings and we see some little signs of the economy improving. We own a business and because so many people lost their jobs, it has effected our business.
We do take some time to smell the roses and we have a trip planned for later this year to visit our children and grandchildren in California. I hope that 2012 will prove to be a better year for everyone. We plan to retire by the time my husband turns 70. Just a few years later than we originally thought that we would, but thank goodness we are both healthy and very happily married for 45 years!
I found ShmoozeTalk.com by surfing the web. I think it’s a great idea!
